A backyard escape of your dream–visually appealing and functional–is the need of every homeowner. But in the real world, there can be many constraints that are stopping you from creating your ideal backyard oasis. From Budget concerns to limited space–there are so many things to consider.

This article aims to make the decisions easy for you. With these eight micro-architecture ideas, you can add the functional and aesthetic appeal to your backyard,

Arbor

Starting with the smallest, an arbor is one of the most common backyard structures. Usually, an arched frame (or square-cornered) landscape architecture defines your outdoor space.

You can jewell the arbor with climbing plants and flowers, making it the perfect shade during warmer months. Plus, a well-built one will boost your curb appeal, thus enhancing the overall property value.

With different styles and designs, you can buy an arbor that complements our backyard’s aesthetic. Even better if you think of it as a way to create a protected and intimate space, as living fences and screens are one of the biggest trends in landscape design.

Greenhouse

Greenhouses are the ultimate backyard addition for all gardening lovers. These freestanding structures, also known as glasshouses, shield your plants from bad weather, control heating, and provide the optimal growing space.

Depending on your space and need, you can personalize the size and designs of the greenhouse. From one-day DIY projects covered in polyethylene to professionally designed fabricated structures (costing thousands of dollars), it’s all customizable

However, focus on these key elements before setting up your backyard Greenhouse:

  • Location
  • Structure (standalone or attached)
  • Frame and form
  • Supplies–light, water, air, and flooring
  • Permits needed

Chicken Coop

Another functional structure is chicken coops. It’s a great option for homeowners interested in starting their own poultry. The chicken coop will give your feathered friends a safe home to live, roost, and lay eggs. Plus, it’ll add a rustic charm to your backyard to your homestead-inspired retreat.

A lean-to-design small coop is also a space saver, ideal for setting up a wall or fence again. However, ensure the coop has easy exterior access to nesting boxes and a hinged lid for simple cleaning and egg collection.

Double Duty Seating

A small backyard needs shape-shifting furniture that is always on double-duty. This includes multi-tasking benches, chairs, and tables.

Even better if you can find seating with hidden storage to keep the pillows and throws or tables that are expandable–for when you have friends and family over. You can also get drink stations that doubles as potting benches–another idea for gardening enthusiasts.

Outdoor Dining

Do you love to grill or barbeque? If your space allows, you can add an outdoor kitchen with a basic grill counter, barbecue station, outdoor refrigerator, and counter. For those feeling more creative, go a step ahead and plant your own vegetable and herb garden to add flavor on the spot.

The key considerations here are:

  • Space and layout
  • Weather protection
  • Utilities (water, electricity, and proper ventilation)
  • Material durability – choose weather resistant material like stone countertops

A Cozy Fire Pit

A fire element can brighten up every space–and backyards are no different. It adds warmth and ambiance and provides the perfect conversation spot for family gatherings. In the chili season, the firepit can also become a cozy spot for rewinding in the evening after a long work day.

When you consider the firepit, choose a location that is safe from your home, trees, or any flammable structure. Add some seating around the pit for comfortable conversations. Choose designs that blend seamlessly with other elements of your backyard–garden, outdoor kitchen, and patio.

Add Some Shade

If your small backyard gets too much sunlight, enjoying your backyard oasis can be a bit difficult. Fortunately, you have a few solutions. The most budget-friendly and quick option is adding a large umbrella to make it bearable in hot weather.

A pergola with vines is another alternative for adding shade with character. It’s a simple, effective way to add shade and an inviting outdoor space.

You can also choose a custom-built gazebo or covered patio. The gazebo can also become your backyard’s focal point, whether you choose a traditional wooden structure or a contemporary metal design.

No matter which one you choose, decorate the shade with ambient lighting to further boost the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the space.

A Water Element

Adding a water feature to the backyard is an ideal way to bring relaxation and tranquility to your outdoor space. It can be a gentle fountain or a serene point–the water element will transform the space into a peaceful retreat.

A well-built water element elevates your backyard atmosphere while also increasing the property value. Ideally, place the feature amidst your landscaping, coupling it with the garden. Decorate it with greenery and stones for the most natural feel.

Micro-Architecture, Big Difference

Backyards can be the most alluring part of your home, jeweled with a garden, fire pit, and foundations. But that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on functionality.

Integrating the small structures mentioned above–like the chicken coop and greenhouse—is the perfect option to make your backyard a functional yet tranquil oasis. So, incorporate your favorite structures from above and create the outdoor space of your dreams.

This article has some interesting ideas for backyards. I like the idea of adding a fire pit and maybe a greenhouse. The suggestions seem practical, but I’m not sure how many people would actually build these things.
