The Han Pao-Teh Memorial Museum, set within the grounds of Tainan University of the Arts, is a conceptual masterpiece that transcends traditional museum design. Its foundational concept, ‘a cube within a cube,’ is a profound expression of Han Pao-Teh’s multifaceted approach to knowledge and education. This geometric metaphor captures the essence of Han’s intellectual legacy, symbolizing the interplay of different dimensions of understanding and the depth of his architectural philosophy.

The conceptual design of the Han Pao-Teh Memorial Museum at Tainan University of the Arts is an artistic representation of Han’s intellectual and architectural philosophy, encapsulated in the ‘cube within a cube’ motif. This geometric symbolism reflects the complexity and depth of Han’s contributions to modern architectural theory, suggesting the multifaceted nature of knowledge and the robustness of his spirit. The intentional integration of exhibition and educational spaces within the museum embodies Han’s vision of seamless learning environments, fostering an interactive and immersive educational experience. The spatial arrangement, light dynamics, and structural interplay within the museum not only create a visually striking architectural piece but also serve as a metaphor for the intersection of different dimensions of understanding, mirroring Han Pao-Teh’s enduring legacy in the field of architecture and education.

The design desicion behind of the museum, described as ‘a cube within a cube,’ is a study in simplicity and strength. This geometric configuration is not just an aesthetic choice but is laden with metaphorical significance. The points where the two cubes intersect symbolize the multifaceted nature of Han’s knowledge, while the use of robust architectural concrete reflects his unyielding spirit. The museum’s spatial arrangements are thoughtfully designed to guide visitors through an immersive journey. The entrance is accessed via low-rise stairs above a reflecting pool, leading to the main student exhibition space. This space, with its impressive 13.5-meter height, is dominated by an imposing cubic mass that seems to defy gravity. Suspended within this larger cube is the ‘Han Pao-Teh Permanent Exhibition Room,’ a two-story, auditorium-like space that slightly protrudes from its surroundings. The rotation of this inner cube creates a dramatic split in the wall, allowing light to pour in and cast stark contrasts of light and shadow, enhancing the theatrical atmosphere of the exhibition space.

A key feature of the museum is a large window that offers a view of the surrounding greenery, leading visitors to a theatrical staircase. This staircase takes visitors on a counter-clockwise journey, moving between the interior and exterior of the building. From the overhanging stairs outside, visitors can look back at the path they’ve traveled before turning into the ‘Han Pao-Teh Permanent Exhibition Room.’ The journey concludes with a narrow, gorge-like path that ascends to the building’s top level, symbolizing the culmination of an enlightening journey through Han Pao-Teh’s legacy and the world of architectural theory. This memorial museum stands as a remarkable homage to Han Pao-Teh, reflecting his enduring influence on architecture and education in Taiwan.
