Design Innovations for Housing in the Tropics
An International Competition on Climate-Responsive Housing

In conjunction with the 9th International Conference of the International Network for Tropical Architecture (iNTA), the 2025 iNTA Design Competition invites architects, designers, engineers, students, and interdisciplinary teams to submit climate-responsive housing solutions tailored for tropical regions. This global competition seeks designs that thoughtfully address the complex environmental, cultural, and social contexts of tropical and subtropical climates.

Eligible submissions include both built and unbuilt projects completed within the past five years. Proposals should be situated in—or specifically respond to—tropical or subtropical zones (defined as regions within 23° north and south latitude), particularly areas affected by extreme weather conditions such as coastal storms or severe droughts.

Entries should align with the conference’s central themes of resilience, sustainability, action, and adaptive reuse, integrating high environmental performance with strong architectural identity. Successful designs will demonstrate deep sensitivity to local materials, traditions, and community needs while advancing forward-thinking strategies for climate adaptation and mitigation.

Participants are encouraged to reconceptualize tropical housing as an ecological interface, a cultural statement, and a catalyst for community engagement. Special emphasis is placed on innovative, sustainable roof systems that confront the challenges of tropical climates while celebrating local heritage and fostering long-term resilience.
