The Noventa Vicentina Blue Kindergarten by MD41 presents a vibrant rethinking of early childhood environments, transforming a simple school building into a holistic educational landscape. Supported by PNRR funding, the project occupies a 2,300 m² site with a compact 750 m² built area, yet it achieves a powerful spatial presence through its orientation toward a generous eastern garden—a green core that shapes the rhythm of daily activities and anchors the school’s identity.

A Blue Exterior that Connects Architecture with Sky and Landscape

The first striking feature of the kindergarten is its bold blue façade, a deliberate gesture that establishes a visual dialogue with the sky and the expansive surroundings. This chromatic choice infuses the building with character and joy, making it instantly recognizable to children and local residents. Chamfered corners further animate the exterior, catching and refracting sunlight to create shifting patterns of shadow, lending the compact volume a sense of depth and movement throughout the day. The result is an exterior that feels playful yet composed—perfectly aligned with the spirit of a space designed for young learners.

A Functional Layout Supporting Community and Early Learning

The interior organization reflects a thoughtful division of functions, ensuring both openness to the community and protection of the children’s daily routines. The first zone accommodates publicly accessible spaces, including flexible workshops that can host activities beyond school hours. These workshops, supported by intuitive service areas, strengthen the kindergarten’s role as a civic hub and encourage local engagement.

The second zone forms the core of the educational environment, structured around two autonomous classroom clusters. Each cluster contains independent services and its own covered outdoor space, enabling learning to flow seamlessly between interior rooms and the natural world. A dedicated nap room, along with practical support areas like storage and laundry, ensures that the building meets the full spectrum of early childhood needs.

Corridors as Pathways of Light, Play, and Interaction

At the heart of the internal experience are the luminous corridors—far more than transitional spaces. Designed as experiential pathways, they serve as places for play, movement, and informal social interaction. Large openings along the corridors frame views of the garden and flood the interiors with natural light, creating a continuous visual relationship between indoors and outdoors. This architectural transparency enhances children’s sense of orientation while fostering curiosity and exploration.

Climate-Conscious Design for Comfort and Sustainability

Environmental sensitivity is central to the project. Canopies and shading systems regulate sunlight and protect interior spaces from seasonal temperature extremes, ensuring thermal comfort year-round. The integration of advanced monitoring technologies allows for constant evaluation of indoor microclimatic conditions, supporting the school’s compliance with NZEB (Nearly Zero-Energy Building) standards. This commitment to sustainability transforms the kindergarten into a model of responsible contemporary architecture—one that values energy performance as much as aesthetic and pedagogical quality.

A Small World Where Architecture and Learning Intertwine

More than a building, the Noventa Vicentina Blue Kindergarten is conceived as a miniature educational landscape, where architecture actively supports children’s growth. Natural light becomes a teaching tool; color stimulates imagination; outdoor spaces encourage sensory learning; and thoughtful spatial sequences shape safe, meaningful experiences. MD41’s design creates a nurturing environment where play, discovery, and nature are woven into the fabric of the school day.

A New Vision for Early Childhood Architecture

By blending functionality, sustainability, and emotional resonance, this project sets a new benchmark for kindergartens in Italy and beyond. It demonstrates how architecture can become a partner in pedagogy—quietly shaping children’s perception of space, their relationship to the environment, and their joy in learning. The Noventa Vicentina Blue Kindergarten stands as an inspiring example of how design can elevate educational spaces into realms of wonder, creativity, and growth.
