Bivacco Brédy by BCW Collective

Designed by BCW Collective, Bivacco Bredy is a high-altitude memorial hut in Italy’s Vertosan Valley. Created to honor Claudio Brédy, the shelter blends minimalist design, symbolic form, and environmental functionality—framing iconic peaks while providing warmth, comfort, and a lasting tribute to a passionate mountaineer.

Bivacco Bredy emerged as the winning design from a selective competition hosted by YACademy and Cantieri d’Alta Quota, commissioned by the Brédy family. Created by BCW Collective, this mountain shelter is situated at a lofty 2,500 meters altitude in Valle d’Aosta’s remote Vertosan Valley, near the serene alpine lakes known as Laghi di Dzioule.

The competition aimed to develop a detailed concept for a bivouac that would honor the legacy of Claudio Brédy, a prominent politician and passionate mountaineer from Valle d’Aosta, who tragically died in a climbing accident in late 2017.

Drawing inspiration from Claudio Brédy’s adventurous spirit and deep connection to the surrounding mountains, the design embodies a commemorative essence. Symbolism plays a vital role, with minimalist architectural elements that respect the starkness of the alpine environment. The structure’s bold cantilever, extending into empty space, metaphorically reflects the void left by Claudio’s absence both within his family and the broader community.

The bivouac is designed as a kind of observational telescope, with its main opening directed southward to frame breathtaking views of peaks like Grivola and Gran Paradiso—one of the majestic 4000-meter summits Claudio once climbed. This southern orientation also functions practically, optimizing sunlight exposure to naturally warm the shelter during the harsh winter months. The building’s envelope, clad in resilient zinc panels over insulated walls, efficiently conserves heat.

Inside, the cozy wooden interior is arranged to enhance usability and comfort, highlighting the spectacular mountain vistas outside. On either side of the shelter, foldable sleeping bunks crafted from climbing rope provide practical resting spaces, converging into a generous communal area centered on the panoramic outlook. A vestibule offers protection against the elements and serves as a convenient storage area for climbing equipment.

With its clean, powerful form inspired by its mountainous setting and the dramatic cantilever reaching into space, Bivacco Bredy establishes itself as a new architectural icon for the Vertosan Valley, celebrating both the landscape and the memory of Claudio Brédy.
