Archiol Competitions is inviting architects, designers and students to design a Future Food Lab, an architectural hub that brings together food research, production, education and public engagement. Registration closes on 8 October 2026 (late registration fee $50), submissions are due on 18 October 2026 and results will be announced on 24 December 2026. All deadlines are 11:59 pm UTC.
With the global population growing and climate pressures rising, the brief argues that the way food is produced, distributed and consumed has to change, and that architecture should take an active part in that shift rather than simply housing it. Proposals are expected to address food security, climate resilience, urban agriculture, waste reduction and community awareness. The suggested programme includes research and innovation labs, experimental farming such as vertical farming, hydroponics, aquaponics and algae labs, test kitchens, processing and storage, education and exhibition areas, community dining, markets and workshops, and circular systems for composting, recycling and energy recovery. The site is open: entrants may choose an urban, peri-urban or rural context, justified by climate, access, relevance to food systems and social impact.
The competition is open to all, with individual or team entries of up to four members and no restrictions on age, nationality or academic background. Entries will be judged on innovation, architectural quality, sustainability and resilience, programme integration and presentation. Recognition goes to three winners, five honourable mentions, one special mention and thirty shortlisted entries; the final cash prize amounts depend on the number of entries received.
