The Theahtlon: A Sports Enthusiasts Hub Promoting Healthy Lifestyle Through Modern Architecture

The Theathlon is a proposed sports-focused mall in Santa Rosa City, Laguna Province, Philippines, designed by Lance Marco M. Bandiling to turn everyday retail into a hub for healthy living. Sports has always been entertained in the Philippines, and recent survey figures underline that pull: 90 percent of Filipinos believe that sports develop the character of children, and 75 percent believe that sports can bring people together. History and sports rank as the top two sources of Filipino pride, with 93 percent of Filipinos proud of the country’s accomplishments in sports. The Theathlon answers that enthusiasm by gathering top sports brands and multi-variety stores into one development built around movement and wellbeing.

The concept positions the project as a one-stop shop for sports enthusiasts and people practicing a healthy lifestyle, open to Filipinos of all ages. It aims to offer a wholesome environment for families and children, a place where they can have fun and exercise while discovering the sport that suits them best. By presenting a wide range of attractions for sports enthusiasts, families, children, and both local and foreign tourists, the scheme serves existing athletes while introducing and guiding those still developing their skills. To reinforce the wellness theme, the mall folds in food and beverage stores that promote a healthy diet, so accessibility and convenience reach old and new sports enthusiasts alike.

Designing a Sports Facility as Social Space

A building of this type asks more of its architecture than ordinary retail. A sports facility must accommodate wide clear spans, durable and slip-resistant surfaces, generous circulation for crowds, and clear sightlines that let visitors read the activity around them. Daylight, ventilation, and easy wayfinding matter because they shape how comfortable and active people feel inside. Locating such a venue within a shopping mall blends commerce with recreation, encouraging casual visitors to try a class or a court they might otherwise never seek out.

This dual role also supports broader public-health goals, since accessible spaces for exercise and a healthy diet can shift daily habits across a community. By treating sport as a shared civic experience rather than a private pursuit, Bandiling’s Theathlon frames architecture as an invitation to move, gather, and stay well in Santa Rosa City.
