What Makes a Free CAD Block Worth Inserting?

Four things, and file count is not one of them. The geometry has to be drawn at 1:1 in a stated unit system so it lands at the right size on insertion. It should sit on layer 0, or on a few clearly named layers, so it takes the properties of the layer you insert it onto rather than dragging a foreign layer structure into your file. The insertion point needs to be useful, a wall face or a centreline rather than a corner of the bounding box. And there should be a licence you can find without emailing anyone.

The cleanest source of generic 2D content here. Bibliocad

Dimensions.com works differently from every other entry. Rather than hosting uploads, it publishes dimensioned reference drawings researched and drawn in-house, in DWG, SVG and JPG for 2D and 3DM, SKP and OBJ for 3D. How Do You Check a Free CAD Block Before You Insert It?

Open it in a blank drawing first, never straight into a live file. Run AUDIT to catch errors, PURGE to strip unused definitions, then check three values: the drawing units, the block’s overall dimension against a known figure, and the insertion point. Anything passing those three is safe to bring across with DesignCenter or a copy and paste.

The dimension check is the one people skip. Measure a door leaf that should read 900 mm, or a bed that should be 1900 mm long. If the number is out by a factor of 10, 25.4 or 1000, the file was drawn in a different unit system and the insertion scale needs correcting rather than the geometry. The Licence Question Most Block Libraries Leave Unanswered

Free to download and free to use in paid work are two different statements, and the gap between them catches practices out. Dimensions.com grants an irrevocable, worldwide licence to download, copy, modify and use its drawings for non-commercial uses, with attribution and a working link required where the work is referenced, and directs users to contact the company for commercial purposes. Its terms are published at dimensions.com/legal. Resale, repackaging and redistribution of its DWG, SVG, SKP and OBJ files are ruled out entirely.

That is a fair position for a company funding its own drafting, but it is not what most architects assume when a site turns up in a list of free autocad blocks. A block used to check a clearance during design is one thing. The same block sitting inside an issued drawing set on a fee-paying project is another.

Compare that with sources that state the opposite plainly. CADBlockDWG publishes a licence granting a worldwide, royalty-free right to download, modify and use its blocks in commercial deliverables with no attribution required, excluding only resale of the collection itself. ARCAT attaches a licence agreement to every download. Those are the terms you want on file when a client or an insurer asks where a drawing came from.

Three questions settle it for any library offering free CAD blocks. Does the site publish licence terms at all, or only a terms of use page about the website itself? Do those terms name commercial use in words rather than by implication? And is the content user contributed, in which case the site may not hold the rights it is granting you? Where answers are missing, the safe use is reference only and the block gets redrawn before it reaches the set.
