Apartamento AM by Patricia Martinez Arquitetura

Located in the Vila Madalena district of São Paulo, Apartamento AM was designed for a young German executive and his girlfriend. The project, designed by Patricia Martinez Arquitetura, mixes European and Brazilian features in the 190 m² space.

With furniture signed by big names in Brazilian design, the space was designed with a clear, solid material base and the integration of the social areas, creating a feeling of spaciousness and lightness.

“The quality of the design and the elements chosen mattered a lot to the client, who, having an international outlook, valued the right choice of materials. In this way, we created spaces that not only function, but function well,” explains Patricia Martinez.

A good example of this is the social area, planned to have all the rooms integrated. In the TV room, right at the entrance to the apartment, the mix of materials and textures is present. The sofa and cushions, as well as being made of a comfortable fabric, create a contrast with the light palette chosen for the project.

The planned joinery not only warmed up the room, but was also essential for dividing up the spaces. The pillar that houses the television and the residents’ personal belongings divides the social area from the intimate one. According to the architect, its installation was one of the biggest challenges of the project. The entire circulation area is covered in slatted panels, both on the walls and on the ceiling, mimicking the access doors to the internal environments.

The bar area, located between the TV room and the living room, was designed especially for moments of relaxation for the residents with family and friends and consists of a table with a round Cumaru wood top and concrete base and four straw chairs, reminiscent of Brazilian handicrafts. Leaning against the wall, a trolley with a black steel structure acts as a support for drinks.

In the living room, the former balcony was leveled and unified with the other rooms, providing a wide view and making good use of the available area. Using furniture designed by the Brazilian designer Jader Almeida, the office created a minimalist, functional and neutral environment that values Brazilian production.

Connected to each other, the kitchen and dining room reinforce the language used throughout the apartment. The organic shape of the dining table, designed by Jacqueline Terpins, makes it the focal point of the space.

The couple’s suite was designed as a space of peace and tranquillity. The bed, facing the large glass windows, not only has a privileged view, but also receives plenty of natural light.

For the headboard area, a piece of joinery was chosen that acts as a division between the bedroom and the closet. Next to the bed, a reading area was created with a Pitu armchair and bench and a bookcase for the residents’ books and personal belongings.

Simple and elegant, the couple’s bathroom is in keeping with the tones of the bedroom, with gray porcelain tiles and light cabinetry.

In the second bedroom, which is for guests, a home office space was created with a sofa bed.

By exploring different materials and textures and betting on pieces of furniture that bring Brazilian touches to the space, Patricia Martinez Arquitetura transforms the minimalist apartment into a unique and functional space, meeting the client’s expectations.

With a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from Mackenzie Presbyterian University, Patrícia Martinez opened her studio Patrícia Martinez Arquitetura (PMA) in 2015, where she works with a team of architects and urban planners on corporate projects, houses, apartments, stores and hotels that strive for harmony between the space and those who inhabit it.

Scandinavian and Japanese references permeate this work, not by chance. These are cultures that value warmth, beauty, sensoriality and art and, in particular, value the moments lived.

PMA has completed more than 400 projects in Brazil and internationally, in countries such as Sweden, Spain, the United States and Panama. All of them accompanied from start to finish by Patrícia, who sees in this movement the grace, taste and pleasure of the profession.
